Laura Chinn’s Suncoast, a highly anticipated semi-biographical feature, will be getting a theatrical release ahead of its streaming debut on Hulu and other Disney streaming platforms globally. According to Variety, the upcoming Searchlight Pictures film is scheduled to hit select Los Angeles and New York theaters on February 2, 2024.

Chinn’s feature directorial debut will be showing in theaters for a full week before its Hulu and Disney debut on February 9. Following Suncoast’s world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film will soon grace theaters in Los Angeles and New York, as well as other markets including Tampa, Phoenix, Kansas City, Denver, Dallas, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Miami.

Suncoast is a deeply personal project for the director

Based on Chinn’s life from the early 2000s and her experiences tending to his brother’s serious illness, the movie will center around a teenager as she navigates high school life while also looking after her brother. When her audacious mother decides to take her brother to a specialized facility, she soon forms an unlikely friendship with an activist who is protesting for what was described as one of the most controversial medical cases.

“Inspired by the semi-autobiographical story of a teenager who, while caring for her brother along with her audacious mother, strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist who is protesting one of the most landmark medical cases of all time,” the official synopsis for Suncoast reads.

The upcoming film stars Nico Parker (The Last of Us), Laura Linney (Ozark), Woody Harrelson (Triangle of Sadness), Ella Anderson (The Glass Castle), and Daniella Taylor (Del Playa). The rest of the cast includes Matt Walsh, Keyla Monterosso Mejia, Scott MacArthur, Amarr, and Ariel Martin.

Produced by Freestyle Picture Company and 7 Deuce Entertainment Production, Suncoast is produced by Jeremy Plager, Francesca Silvestri, Kevin Chinoy, and Oly Obst, with Chris Stinson, Amy Greene, and Anna Schwartz as executive producers. In addition to directing, Chinn also wrote the script for the movie.

Suncoast will hit select theaters on February 2 and will soon stream on Hulu and other Disney platforms on February 9.
