“The Summer I Turned Pretty”'s Lola Tung Feels 'Imposter Syndrome' in Her “Hadestown ”Broadway Debut (Exclusive)

"It's actually sort of comforting to step out on that stage and leave some of those worries behind," Lola Tung tells PEOPLE of battling imposter syndrome

Lola Tung is experiencing a career high at just 21 years old as she performs on Broadway in the Tony-winning musical Hadestown. But as the Summer I Turned Pretty actress tells PEOPLE, she still battles insecurities like the rest of us.

"I feel like I don't get stage fright as much as imposter syndrome," Tung tells PEOPLE. "It's more that and feeling like, 'Do I deserve to be up here and am I equal to the level of talent that's already up here and the amazing people who have played this part before?' "

Stepping onto the stage at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City is what helps take that nagging feeling out of Tung's mind. She first took on the role of Eurydice, one of Hadestown's lead characters, on Feb. 9.

"It's actually sort of comforting to step out on that stage and leave some of those worries behind and just be focused in on what we're doing and live in the moment with everybody onstage and [perform] 'Road to Hell,' " she says. "The first number is so special."

Tung, a New York City native and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts graduate, comes to Broadway after starring in the first two seasons of Prime Video's The Summer I Turned Pretty series. She's costarring alongside Jordan Fisher, who plays the musical's protagonist Orpheus. Hadestown itself is based on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, two lovers who face a challenge when Eurydice is trapped in the underworld by Hades (Phillip Boykin).

As such, the production — winner of eight Tony Awards in 2019, including best musical — features mythical characters such as Hermes, the god of travel, Persephone (played by Grammy winner Ani DiFranco, also in her Broadway debut) and the three Fates — Kay Trinidad, Brit West and Belén Moyano — whom Tung says help ground her in Hadestown's opening number.

"[The actors playing the Fates] come and sit next to me and give me a little wink and stuff like that," Tung tells PEOPLE of the show's first moments. "That just makes me be like, all right, I'm here and this is happening. It's so awesome that I get to be a part of this and I can't believe that, so I'm just going to sit in that and live in that moment, which I feel very grateful for."

Tung grew up a theater kid — she recalls taking photos in front of the Hadestown marquee at Walter Kerr Theatre during the summer of 2020. She will perform in the musical in a limited run that lasts through March 17.

"I had just seen the show earlier that year before everything shut down [due to the COVID-19 pandemic] and I think I kind of immediately fell in love with it," Tung tells PEOPLE. "It is such a beautiful piece of art. It was just incredible how everything ended up happening."
