Summer in St. Mary's Court Dance set for June 7
The first Court Dance of 2022 will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 7, on the tennis courts at St. Mary’s Park, 111 W. Elm Ave.
Admission is free. Chairs are permitted.
For many years, disc jockey Bruce Bezeau played the music at the Court Dances. This year, DJ Chip Williams will take over, offering 1950s and ‘60s music and some line dances.
“The Court Dances will be similar to the past, with a DJ playing the oldies, and everyone can visit with each other,” Amy Mason, recreation programmer for the City of Monroe Parks and Recreation department, said.
Mason is hoping for good attendance and plans to offer another Court Dance later in the summer.
“I am hoping we get a great turnout, as it is a relaxing evening to sit and listen to some great oldies. There are many out there dancing, and we play some line dancing songs too. All ages are welcome to attend," she said.
Court Dances were popular in Monroe in the 1950s and ‘60s.
In 2010, Loretta LaPointe, retired director of the Parks and recreation department, brought them back.
“So many people spoke of the great time they had at the original Court Dances that I knew it would still be enjoyed today,” LaPointe told The News.
