Summer music, movies, and fun coming to Lenoir

May 8—Friday night music is coming back to Downtown Lenoir, and there are several other events planned for this summer, according to a press release from the city.

Friday Night Live concerts will be held on the square from 7 to 10 p.m. in June and July. Each night will feature a different band and different genre of music including '80s and '90s hits, Motown and R&B, Classic Rock, Southern Rock, and Country, according to the press release.

The following bands are scheduled to play this year:

—June 7 — Off The Record (80s hits)

—June 14 — Black Tie (Motown/R&B)

—June 21 — Opal Moon (Rock/Classic Rock)

—June 28 — Mister D and the Rhythm Kings (Country/Rock/Blues)

—July 5 — Dial Up Radio (90s hits)

—July 19 — Red Dirt (Blues/Rock)

—July 26 — Southern Thunder (Southern Rock)

Come early and grab some dinner at one of our downtown restaurants and check out our local shops. Visitors can also take advantage of Downtown Lenoir's social district. The social district allows people 21 and older to bring an alcoholic beverage to the downtown stage. Visitors must buy the beverage from a restaurant or shop in the social district. In addition to Friday Night Live concerts, the city is hosting other events this summer including a Fourth of July Splash Bash, July Fourth Fireworks Show, the North Carolina Blackberry Festival, the Jump Street Drive Music Festival, and two family movie nights, according to the press release.

The Fourth of July Splash Bash will be held from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, at the Lenoir Aquatic & Fitness Center. There will be pool games with prizes for different age groups including a freestyle swim race, raft race, tug of war, cannonball contest (biggest splash), and diving contest (smallest splash). The city of Lenoir July Fourth Fireworks Show will start at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, at Mulberry Recreation Center. Parking is available around Waterlife Church, CubeSmart, and Quest4Life in the old shopping mall parking lot. The public may also park in any other public parking areas around the park that are available. The fireworks show is free.

The North Carolina Blackberry Festival will be Friday July 12, and Saturday, July 13, in Downtown Lenoir. There will be vendors, live music, blackberry cobbler, games and more. The following link has more information about the festival, www.ncblackberryfestival.com. The festival is free to attend.

The City is hosting two, free Family Movie Nights in the auditorium at The Campus at the Historic Lenoir High School. Come watch "Migration" on Saturday, June 29, and "Kung Fu Panda 4" on Saturday, July 27. The movies start at 7 p.m.

The Jump Street Drive Music Festival will be Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Lenoir. Music starts at 6 p.m. both nights. The event is free. Bring your own lawn chair and umbrella for some shade.
