'Suicide Squad' Star Margot Robbie Says Harley Quinn Is the Best Baddie

Margot Robbie will next be seen swinging from vines as the Jane to Alexander Skarsgård’s King of the Jungle in The Legend of Tarzan (July 1). But the role of hers that has comic-book fans most excited is Harley Quinn in this August’s Suicide Squad. The baseball-bat-wielding, hot pants-wearing bombshell nemesis of Batman (and girlfriend to Jared Leto’s Joker), Quinn has already become one of the prime attractions of David Ayer’s upcoming DC Comics-based super-villain team-up. And according to Robbie, that makes total sense, since the demented character is the very best of a very bad bunch.

Speaking with Sarah Nicole Prickett for Oyster magazine, Robbie revealed that what drew her to the part was simply the fact that there may be no cooler character than Quinn.

“For the first time, I thought that I had the best character in the movie. I wouldn’t trade my character in Suicide Squad for anyone else’s…The comics are rad…I hadn’t read any growing up, but now I’m obsessed. I read them in my own time. We went to Comic-Con…and I didn’t get to be in and amongst it because we were shooting, but the energy is insane. People are nuts. I could go as Harley Quinn in the actual costume from the movie, and somebody there would have a better one.“

That enthusiasm for the role – which, she tells Oyster, she didn’t have to audition for – remains strong, even if she’s still feeling more than a bit self-conscious about Quinn’s signature skimpy punk-rock clothing.

Whether or not Robbie is right about Quinn’s squad-leading coolness is a question that won’t be fully answered until Aug. 5, when the film hits theaters. However, given early sneak peaks at her performance — like in the below trailer — we wouldn’t dare bet against her.
