'Suicide Squad' Promo Clip: Viola Davis' Amanda Waller Is the 'Puppet Master'

Following on the heels of 11 individual Suicide Squad character-introduction clips — which quickly give the low-down on each of the Squad’s exceedingly dangerous super-villains — comes a new clip shining a spotlight on the equally imposing woman who assembled this team of unhinged bad guys.

In a new minute-long “Puppet Master” trailer (watch it above), Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is front and center. A ruthless government operative who’s all too willing to sidestep protocol to achieve her own ends, Waller is the woman who decides that the people best suited for her latest, potentially lethal mission are criminals skilled enough to pull off superhuman feats, and yet vile enough to be expendable should things go sour. As her stand-alone spot proves, she may be a well-dressed suit, but she’s just as cold and calculating as Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jared Leto’s Joker, Will Smith’s Deadshot, and the rest of the Squad — and also is, perhaps, the film’s true evil mastermind.

Only teasing what Davis’ Waller might be up to, Suicide Squad’s “Puppet Master” promo further suggests that David Ayer’s DC Comics-based saga will be a battle between the bad, the worse, and the truly awful. Also starring Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Ike Barinholtz, and Scott Eastwood — and with a not-so-surprise appearance from Ben Affleck as Batman — the film breaks into theaters on August 5.
