‘Sugar’ Trailer: Colin Farrell Investigates a High-Profile Hollywood Kidnapping in Noir Series

Colin Farrell is taking on the conspiracies behind Hollywood in Los Angeles-set Apple TV+ detective series “Sugar.”

The Oscar-nominated actor stars as titular private investigator John Sugar who is hired to solve the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. Like the series description teases, as Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets, some very recent, others long-buried.

Farrell executive produces the eight episode limited series, hailing from Academy and Emmy Award-nominated producer Simon Kinberg and Academy Award-nominated director Fernando Meirelles.

Along with Farrell, Amy Ryan, Kirby, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler, and Alex Hernandez star.

“Sugar” is created by Mark Protosevich, who also executive produces along with Kinberg and Audrey Chon for Genre Films. This is the second series from Genre Films for Apple TV+ under Kinberg’s overall deal, following “Invasion.”

Sam Catlin, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich also serve as executive producers. The series was directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “Two Popes”), who also executive produces; Adam Arkin (“The Offer”) directs and additionally co-executive produces.

Aside from “Sugar,” Farrell is deepening his TV career. Following his appearance in Season 2 of “True Detective,” Farrell will lead “The Batman” spin-off series “The Penguin” for Max. Farrell returns as the titular antihero mob nightclub owner Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot. The actor previously told Variety that he didn’t “nearly get to explore the character as much as I wanted to” when starring in “The Batman.”

“There was all this extraordinary work done by [makeup and prosthetics artists] Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun,” Farrell said, “that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more. I just knew there was so much to do with it — age it up, age it down. He’s just such a genius, Mike, so it was his work that was the inspiration, really.”

Also an eight-episode series, like “Sugar,” “The Penguin” is set to debut in 2024.
