Sue Lyon, Lolita star, dies at 73
Sue Lyon, the star of Stanley Kubrick‘s Lolita, has died. She was 73.
Lyon died on Thursday, according to The New York Times. Her friend Phil Syracopoulos announced her death and said that she had been in “declining health” for a while. A cause of death was not revealed.
Born on July 10, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa, Lyon’s family moved to Dallas before eventually settling down in Los Angeles. When she was just 14 years old, Lyon landed the titular role in Lolita, Kubrick’s 1962 adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel. She beat out over 800 other girls who auditioned and Nabokov called her “the perfect nymphet,” which is how the character is described in the novel.
After Lolita, Lyon also had TV and film roles in The Night of the Iguana, Tony Rome, Evel Knievel, and more. Her last acting credit was in the 1980 horror film Alligator.
Lyon was married five times to Hampton Fancher, Roland Harrison, Cotton Adamson, Edward Weathers, and Richard Rudman. is survived by her daughter with Harrison, Nona.
