‘Succession’ siblings Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook set to land Golden Globe category promotions

After both making good on their recent efforts to become first-time lead acting Emmy contenders, formerly supporting “Succession” cast mates Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook are naturally expected to be similarly bumped up on the next Golden Globes ballot. If they do achieve their first Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Drama Actress notices this winter, the on-screen siblings will join a group of 10 other Golden Globe nominees who succeeded in rebranding their initially supporting characters as lead ones. As it stands, said club has not welcomed a new member – regardless of genre or gender – in two full decades.

Culkin’s Golden Globes resume currently includes three fruitless featured bids for “Succession,” on which he was bested by Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal,” 2019), Stellan Skarsgård (“Chernobyl,” 2020) and O Yeong-su (“Squid Game,” 2022). Although Snook only has a 2022 supporting nomination for the HBO series to her name, she actually prevailed, even against awards magnet Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”). Her and Culkin’s joint migration coincides with their show’s closing season, during which lead character Logan Roy (Brian Cox) meets his demise and clears the way for his offspring – including Culkin’s Roman and Snook’s Shiv – to properly attempt to replace him as CEO of his company.

Prior to possibly emulating his TV dad and brother (Jeremy Strong) by conquering the drama lead male category, Culkin will almost surely make history as the first man to ever receive supporting and then lead Golden Globe nominations for a single series. In terms of landing the same promotion as one character, he will have been preceded by Ed Asner, who was recognized for playing Lou Grant on both “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (comedy supporting, 1972-1976) and “Lou Grant” (drama lead, 1978-1982). To date, the only lead-to-supporting male example has involved “L.A. Law” actor Michael Tucker (1988, 1990).

On the female side, Estelle Getty (“The Golden Girls”) moved to supporting in 1991 after winning as a lead in 1986, while initially featured nominees Gail Fisher (“Mannix”) and Loretta Swit (“M*A*S*H”) were temporarily bumped up in 1973 and 1980 before collecting one more supporting bid each. The list of women who permanently migrated from supporting to lead consists of Shelley Long (“Cheers”; moved in 1984), Julianna Margulies (“ER,” 1998), Jennifer Aniston (“Friends,” 2003), Rachel Griffiths (“Six Feet Under,” 2003) and Allison Janney (“The West Wing,” 2003). Additionally, Asner’s cross-category method has been implemented by two comedic actresses: Valerie Harper (as Rhoda Morgenstern) of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (supporting, 1973-1974) and “Rhoda” (lead, 1975-1976) and Polly Holliday (as Flo Castleberry) of “Alice” (supporting, 1979-1980) and “Flo” (lead, 1981).

Snook’s earlier triumph gives her a shot at becoming the fourth performer to win both supporting and lead Golden Globes for a single TV role. As of now, the only dramatic actress in that select group is Fisher, whose portrayal of Peggy Fair was lauded in 1971 (supporting) and 1973 (lead). She was then followed in a general sense by Asner, who bagged bookend trophies for both of his shows (1972, 1976; 1978, 1980), and Long, whose work as Diane Chambers was honored in 1983 (supporting) and 1985 (lead).

At this early point in the 2024 Golden Globes race, “Succession” is (according to Gold Derby’s odds) widely expected to amass acting wins for Culkin, Snook and supporting player Matthew Macfadyen as well as its third Best Drama Series victory (following its first two in 2020 and 2022). Most of our participating users also predict that Culkin will face direct competition from both Cox and Strong, with the most formidable featured performer behind Macfadyen (with a support rate of 10%) being potential first-timer Alan Ruck. Regardless of any other series, “Succession’s” quest to achieve the many records within its reach will undoubtedly make this ceremony one to remember.
