There Is A "Succession" Fan Theory About What's Going To Happen Going Forward, And It Has To Do With This One Tiny Detail

Obviously, spoilers for this week's Succession.

If you're anything like me, then you're probably still thinking about the latest episode of Succession — which is already considered one of the greatest episodes of TV of all time.

And while I can go on and on about the acting during this episode, I also have to say the plot twist of having Logan Roy die so unexpectedly was perhaps one of the biggest OMG moments I have ever had watching an episode of TV.

But there had been a clue about Logan dying on a plane since the Season 4 promo poster was released.

Yup, that's the reflection of a plane flying by on the window behind them!

In fact, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in March — to promote Season 4 — Sarah Snook confirmed there was a hint about what was going to happen during the season in the poster. She simply said, "You won't know until you know."

Now, I bring up the poster clue(s) because it's a reminder that everything from the artwork to clothes to small onscreen moments are purposely set clues and insights. This has led many fans to speculate that there is another clue we might have missed in Episode 3 that is a hint at things to come.

Before I get into it, I do want to say that while this is a fan theory, it could very well be correct and be a potential spoiler.

Now, here is a little background on this theory. A few years ago, writer-director Rian Johnson revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that Apple won't allow filmmakers to use iPhones if the phones are going to be used by bad guys/villains.

So here's the theory: Back in 2021, TikToker gigiontherun noticed that of all the characters on the show, only Kendall, Shiv, Greg, and Connor had iPhones, while Logan, Gerri, Tom, and Roman did not.

Meaning, even though they might be flawed, Kendall, Shiv, Greg, and Connor were considered the "good guys" on the show.

Now, in this week's episode, it was clear that Roman is now an iPhone user as well — with Kendall, Greg, and Shiv also shown using their iPhones this episode.

Phones, of course, were heavily featured in this episode.

While Tom is seen using an Android to communicate with the Roys.

Also, him having an Android answers the plot hole as to why Kendall, Shiv, and Roman didn't FaceTime with Tom in order to see and talk to Logan.

But this also might subtly confirm the theory that he will be the villain going forward and is likely going to be the actual one challenging Kendall, Shiv, and Roman for control of the company.

And Tom might be getting Gerri to support him on his takeover, as she is also seen using her Android throughout the episode.

Tom masterminding a takeover actually does make perfect sense for his story arc (and especially now that his one protector at the company is dead, it's basically the only hand to play), and Gerri helping him would be in her own best interest, as he is one of the few people who knew she was supposed to be fired, and it would give her a powerful ally within the company.

Okay, Succession fans, what do you think of this theory? Do you think the iPhones were the small giveaway? Or do you think something else is in store for Tom and he isn't going to be the main villain moving forward?
