The Roy boys may not have succeeded their dad on “Succession,” but they can at the Golden Globes. Kieran Culkin is the current odds-on favorite to join his TV father and brother, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, respectively, as winners of the Best TV Drama Actor award. And should he prevail in January, “Succession” would become just the second show to produce three different winners in the category.

The only show to achieve this feat is “NYPD Blue,” which yielded three consecutive victories for Davis Caruso in 1994, Dennis Franz in 1995 and Jimmy Smits in 1996. Multiple acting winners per show is rare in this category in general. Besides “Succession” and “NYPD Blue,” “Mission: Impossible” is the only other one with multiple champs, Martin Landau in 1968 and Peter Graves in 1971. Like “NYPD Blue,” “Succession” would win for three consecutive seasons as well — but not in consecutive years. Cox triumphed in 2020 for Season 2, and we don’t blame you if you forgot about Strong’s Season 3 win since that occurred in 2022 when the ceremony was not televised.

It’s certainly not surprising that Culkin is predicted to win for the fourth and final season. He had an expanded role in the wake of Logan’s (Cox) death early in the season as Kendall (Strong), Roman (Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) conspired with and against one another to keep Waystar Royco in the family (preferably each of their own hands) — so much so that Culkin and Snook, who won the supporting actress Globe in 2022, upgraded their placements to lead in line with Strong’s. All three snagged Emmy nominations, and Culkin and Snook are expected to convert those into wins as well, but we won’t get those results until eight days after the Globes since the Emmy ceremony is postponed to Jan. 15.

In other words, Culkin won’t be heading into the Globes with a Best Drama Actor Emmy win, but that might not matter much, given how big the final season of “Succession” was and that he’s been on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s radar since the beginning. With three previous bids in supporting, the actor is the only cast member who’s been nominated for every season so far — and his nomination was “Succession’s” only one for Season 1 in 2019. So a nomination for Season 4 would make Culkin the sole performer to be shortlisted for the entirety of the HBO drama. Despite being the most nominated cast member, he has yet to win, while Cox (two nominations), Strong (one) and Snook (one) all have. Maybe the HFPA won’t pass up the last chance to do so.

For Culkin to come out on top, he may have to take down Strong and Cox — just like at the Emmys. At the moment, “Succession,” which is favored to win its third drama series prize, is predicted to score three drama actor nominations for Culkin, Strong, who’s in second place, and Cox, who’s in fourth (“The Last of Us'” Pedro Pascal is third and “The Crown’s” Dominic West is fifth). No show has earned more than two nominations in the category in the same year, so “Succession” can replicate its historic Emmy achievement at the Globes too.
