Subway employee fired after video shows counters being cleaned with a mop

A Chicago Subway restaurant is back open after it was reportedly shut down when a viral video showed an employee wiping down the soda counter using a mop that had also been used to clean the restaurant floor.

“The health department has been out and everything,” a Subway employee whose name was not provided told Yahoo Lifestyle on Sunday. “There is no issue anymore.”

While things seemed to be back to normal by Sunday, the popular sandwich restaurant confirmed to Yahoo Lifestyle on Saturday that the employee who was videotaped cleaning with the dirty mop has been terminated from their position. They added that the restaurant is now open for business. But just a couple days before, the Chicago Department of Public Health hung a neon green sign reading “License Suspended” on the door of the restaurant, which is located in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. CBS Chicago reported a representative from the agency launched a surprise inspection after seeing the video. The restaurant failed the subsequent health inspection, and their license was suspended.

CBS added that the specific restaurant location has had a number of issues over the years, including failed inspections back in 2017.

Another Chicago Subway location, in The Loop, received several health code violations earlier this week as well, according to City of Chicago records. Data shows the location was cited for reasons such as lack of functioning hand-washing sink in the front food preparation area and walls surrounding the mop sink in disrepair.

The Chicago Department of Public Health did not reply to Yahoo Lifestyle’s inquiries by the time of publication.
