A new study ranks the top 100 most inclusive movies. How did your favorites stack up?

A new study is turning the lens on Hollywood inclusion.

On Thursday, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the Adobe Foundation launched “The Inclusion List,” a data-driven ranking that names the 100 most inclusive theatrically released films from 2019 to 2022. The films analyzed ranged from Marvel blockbusters like "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" and movie musicals like "Dear Evan Hansen" to horror hits such as "Candyman," "Scream" and "It Chapter Two."

“There's never been a large-scale effort to rate films and companies on inclusion,” says Dr. Stacy Smith, founder and director of USC Annenberg's Inclusion Initiative. “It was important to me that we take stock of who is doing well and celebrate those efforts, as well as continue to challenge and urge the industry to take inclusion seriously and show where gaps remain.”

Drawing solely from data, the research team scored 376 movies on 20 different inclusion indicators. Some of those criteria included: Was there at least one woman or person of color credited as a writer? Was there at least one lead or co-lead in the film with a disability? And was there at least one lead or co-lead who was LGBTQ?

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” topped the list, with a score of 14 out of 20. The historical epic starring Viola Davis met three of the 10 criteria for cast inclusion, while achieving 11 out of 10 for crew inclusion. (An additional point was allocated for movies directed by women of color, Smith notes.)

“ ‘The Woman King’ is a perfect example that shows us when people want to be inclusive, they can,” Smith says. “Behind the camera, unit head positions reflected inclusion by having men and women of color and white women in a variety of roles.”

'Parasite' fared best of recent Oscar best-picture winners

A number of recent best picture Oscar winners appeared on the top 100 list, including “Parasite” (tied for No. 15), “Nomadland” (No. 31) and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (No. 64). Marvel movies “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (No. 22) and “Eternals” (tied for No. 40) both ranked high, as did Jordan Peele movies “Us” (No. 29) and “Nope” (tied for No. 32).

Most films in the top 10 list scored five or less points when it came to their casts, meaning there is still room to grow.

“Onscreen, we know that proportional representation across the groups we measured was not achieved consistently,” Smith says. “Particularly for characters with disabilities and those 65 and older, the industry needs to show marked improvement.”

In addition to ranking the most diverse movies, “The Inclusion List” also highlighted the most inclusive producers and film distributors, with Universal Pictures netting 24 movies on the top 100 list. View the full list at inclusionlist.org.
