Student fashion show, 'Manifest the Runway,' to be held in Adrian College's Hickman Gallery

ADRIAN — Models will walk down the tall, circular staircase just inside Adrian College’s Hickman Gallery in the Mahan Center during a planned fashion show titled “Manifest the Runway” and scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27.

The event, free and open to the public, is being staged in the Mahan Center for Art and Interior Design’s Hickman Gallery main entrance by Adrian College’s Fashion Merchandising students. The fashion show will feature what the students interpret as what’s new and upcoming in the world of fashion.

Audience members will be able to watch the show from the main floor, a news release from Adrian College said. Emcees will provide upbeat and energetic music for the runway show, which is expected to last approximately 45 minutes.

Vincent Yu, Adrian College Assistant Professor of Fashion Merchandising, had his students create a fashion magazine, and they selected “Manifest” as its title.

“We can ‘manifest’ a lot of different things in our life,” Yu said in the release. “So, the runway just took over the name and we call it ‘Manifest the Runway.’”

Class courses as part of the Fashion Merchandising program include introduction to the industry, textiles, history of fashion, visual merchandising and fashion promotions, and assortment planning in addition to an internship requirement. Other opportunities include a semester study abroad through Regent’s University in London, visits to the Apparel Mart to Chicago’s StyleMax, and travel to fashion capitals such as London, Paris and Milan.

Career opportunities include visual merchandising, merchandise buying, marketing, assortment planning, entrepreneurship, retail and sustainability.

Adrian College's Fashion Merchandising students had to source their own garments for Wednesday's show by going to thrift stores or borrowing pieces from friends.

“They had to be very resourceful to create their outfits,” Yu said. “I want my students to have the best experience. My teaching philosophy is I want them to be hands-on and experience what they will do when they graduate from school. And another thing is to build their portfolio. In fashion design it’s very important. Even if they’re in marketing or event planning, the fashion show and magazine can help with their portfolio.”
