What to stream this weekend: Animated 'Scoob!' adventure, Tom Hardy as 'Capone'

Theaters are still closed, but new streaming movies are coming to entertain you and your family during socially distanced times.

This weekend, there are a couple of high-profile theatrical releases that moved to streaming, including an animated reintroduction to Scooby-Doo and Tom Hardy going mad as a dying gangster. Also on the docket: an opioid drama, a Netflix documentary full of celebrity stories about drug use (which is much less serious than it sounds) and Tom Berenger fighting to stay alive in an action thriller. And if that's not enough to get you online and watching movies, check out the new Alamo On Demand platform for a Bong Joon-ho binge, including best-picture winner "Parasite."

Here's a rundown of new movies hitting streaming this Friday for every cinematic taste:

Best movie series: 20 to binge during quarantine (including 'Star Wars,' of course)

Staying Apart, Together: A newsletter about how to cope with the coronavirus pandemic

Shaggy (left, voiced by Will Forte) and Scooby-Doo (Frank Welker) are up to their scaredy-cat high jinks again in "Scoob!"

If you live for Scooby Snacks and mystery-solving best buds: 'Scoob!'

"Trolls World Tour" did bonkers business going directly to streaming, and a new animated take on the Scooby gang is also coming to entertain families in quarantine. Unfortunately, it'll also disappoint those hoping for a fresh start on the 51-year-old franchise with the iconic talking dog. The A-list cast (featuring Will Forte, Zac Efron and Gina Rodriguez) and fleeting origin story work, but weirdly, "Scoob!" decides to keep its main characters split up on separate missions for much of the movie. That's OK for "Empire Strikes Back," less so if you're trying to get a new generation of youngsters hooked on all things Scooby.

If you're a fan of Tom Hardy going full-on nuts: 'Capone'

Hardy's not really known for his conventional roles but he goes to eccentric, gripping lengths to portray the infamous Al Capone in the final year of his life. If you liked Hardy in the blistering "Bronson," you'll love how he plays the 47-year-old gangster as dementia sets in and his body falls apart, though there's still plenty of rage in the historical figure. As those around him, goons and feds alike, wonder if he has $10 million hidden, Capone navigates mundane reality and the bloody visions that call back to a life lived most violently. In what's going to be a really weird year for the Oscars, we might have our first legit best-actor contender.

If you want a drug-filled film that's lighthearted: 'Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics'

“Don’t get me wrong, drugs can be dangerous. They can also be hilarious.” That's how Nick Offerman (in Science Guy mode) introduces the new Netflix documentary that rounds up A-listers' and comedians' stories about the greatest drug trips – be it on LSD, mushrooms or otherwise – re-created via animation or a cheesy after-school special format. There are some helpful lessons (don't trip and drive, avoid mirrors), Sting recalls the one time he helped a cow through a birth while on peyote, Ben Stiller freaked out at the sight of Macy's Thanksgiving balloons, and the late Carrie Fisher recounts a run-in with a misbehaving acorn in Central Park.

If you want a drug-filled film that's deadly serious: 'Castle in the Ground'

Writer/director Joey Klein tackles the opioid epidemic through a young person's lens in this bleak drama. Alex Wolff ("Hereditary") stars as a teenager named Henry who takes care of his terminally ill mother (a fairly unrecognizable Neve Campbell) and when she dies, he befriends troubled next-door neighbor Ana (Imogen Poots) – who's trying to get herself clean – and he starts taking his mom's leftover medications. "Castle" is a fairly emotional addiction flick as Henry's life begins to fall apart once he's hooked and it turns into a grizzled crime drama when the two get embroiled in Ana's endless bad decisions.

If you've been missing Tom Berenger: 'Blood and Money'

Going the streaming route for your cinematic needs opens up all sorts of avenues, like where Berenger's been hanging for a while. The Oscar nominee has done quite a few direct-to-video flicks in recent years, and in this tense action thriller, Berenger plays a retired veteran looking to snag a buck in the snowy Maine woods. Instead of his woodlands target, he finds a dead woman and other assorted trouble when crossing a group of casino robbers who just jacked $1.2 million and are now hiding in the forest.
