The Grand Ole Opry kicked off Saturday night with a touching tribute to country legend Kenny Rogers.

Vince Gill, accompanied by Marty Stuart and Brad Paisley, led a rendition of Rogers' original, "Sweet Music Man." Rogers, a Country Music Hall of Fame crossover success who sold more than 100 million albums in his six-decade career, died Friday at age 81.

"Just, (with) the loss of Kenny today, it felt like the most appropriate thing we could do," Gill said after the song. "Just honor a great, great man."

On the Rogers-penned track released in 1977, Gill said, "That was always one of my favorite songs that Kenny ever did."

Paisley offered another tribute to Rogers later in the show, covering a chorus of "The Gambler" at the end of his 2010 hit, "This Is Country Music."

The Opry circle remained unbroken Saturday night, with Paisley, Gill and Stuart performing in the round for an empty house. Opry leadership decided last week to continue the 94-year-old broadcast without an audience due to coronavirus concerns.

The trio swapped songs, stories and guitar solos during the broadcast, performing famed cuts from each entertainer: Paisley's "Mud on the Tires," Stuart's "Hobo's Prayer" and Gill's "Go Rest High On That Mountain."
