Renny Harlin’s The Strangers Chapter 1 may have just hit theaters, but its 4K UHD home release has already been tentatively confirmed.

The Walmart exclusive SteelBook release has a release date of July 23, 2024.

The official synopsis reads, ”From master director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, The Exorcist: The Beginning) comes a new trilogy of terror. In Chapter I, Madelaine Petsch (TV’s “Riverdale”) stars as a young woman starting a new life with her fiancé. Suddenly, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, they become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. What begins as a fight to stay alive becomes one woman’s journey of courage and cunning in this horror series bridging three compelling films.”

The Strangers Chapter 1 Reception is Poor, But Box Office is Healthy

The first part of The Strangers Trilogy landed in theaters last week and has received underwhelming reviews. However, it had a strong weekend for its relatively small budget, raking in $12 million domestically, only behind Ryan Reynolds’ IF and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It had a budget of just $8.5 million.

A good box office should help the next chapters in The Strangers Trilogy hit theaters, and with less reliance on retreading the plot of the original, maybe a better critical reception will come with it.

But why is The Strangers Trilogy even a thing? Director Renny Harlin says it helps “explore what happens to the victims of this kind of violence and who the perpetrators are of this kind of violence. Where are they coming from and why?”

Before Harlin’s reimagining, thee was the original. The Strangers came out in 2008 and starred Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler as a couple under siege from three masked strangers. The movie gained a lot of attention for its cold, bleak take on home invasion. A sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night appeared in 2018, and both movies did reasonably well at the box office on modest budgets.
