Thanksgiving Day gives many workers a break before the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season, especially before Black Friday which takes place the following day when the clock strikes midnight on Nov. 24.

The trend of U.S. retailers and big-box stores putting their employees first and closing their businesses on the holiday began in 2020, ever since Walmart made the decision to close up shop at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Target followed suit in an attempt to reduce crowds and make their customers' shopping experience less stressful. The company continued with its store closure the following year and has made the decision to permanently halt operation on Thanksgiving Day moving forward.

This year, Walgreens announced for the first time in the company's history that all of its stores and pharmacies will close on Thanksgiving "to give team members time with their loved ones," a spokesperson tells PEOPLE. However, Walgreen's 24-hour locations will remain open "to meet customer and patient healthcare needs."
