Sting Reflects on a Potential Match with The Undertaker

Sting, an iconic figure in professional wrestling, is set to retire this week, prompting reflections on his illustrious career. Among the topics discussed is the dream match that never materialized a showdown with The Undertaker.

For years, wrestling fans worldwide envisioned a clash between Sting and The Undertaker. When Sting made his WWE debut in 2014, hopes were high for the dream match to become a reality. However, the anticipated bout never came to fruition.

Speaking with Shakiel Mahjouri of CBS Sports, Sting expressed his thoughts on never having faced The Undertaker in WWE. He acknowledged that if executed properly, the match would have left an indelible mark on the industry.

He stated, “I think if it was done right, it could have been a night, for sure, everyone would remember and never forget. They would be talking about it to this day. But it just was not going to happen. I thought, ‘Well, maybe if I get my foot in the door, we’ll see what happens.’ So I got my foot in the door. We did a WrestleMania with Triple H and then Vince [Vince McMahon] called and said, ‘Hey, I want you to have a world title match with Seth. Would you be willing to do that?’ ‘Yeah, I’d be willing to do that.’ Still, in hopes that somehow I could get in there with Taker.”

Sting had only 4 matches in WWE, beginning with his debut against Triple H at WrestleMania 31. The next two matches occurred on RAW on the same night. Sting competed in singles matches against The Big Show, which was interrupted by Seth Rollins, resulting in a tag team match.

The bout saw Sting teaming up with John Cena against Seth Rollins and The Big Show. The Icon’s final match took place at the WWE Night of Champions pay-per-view in 2015. During the match Sting sustained a legitimate injury, ultimately leading to his retirement from wrestling.

WWE had rejected Sting’s proposed match with The Undertaker

Sting, who retired from wrestling in 2015, made his comeback in AEW in 2020. Signing with AEW that year, he has participated in several high-profile matches, contributing to numerous memorable moments alongside his tag team partner, Darby Allin.

In the same year WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker had his final match against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36 in a cinematic encounter that garnered praise from fans. However, Sting had also proposed an idea for a cinematic match against The Undertaker, which Vince McMahon ultimately rejected.

According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports, Sting expressed interest in a cinematic showdown with The Undertaker in 2020. However, McMahon showed no interest in showcasing that match. Despite Sting’s desire for the cinematic bout, McMahon’s disinterest prevented its realization. While fans had long awaited a match between Undertaker and Sting, it never garnered McMahon’s enthusiasm. Thus, the dream match between Sting and The Undertaker remains forever a “what if” scenario.
