Steve Martin and Stephen Colbert’s Funny Song About Friendship

On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Stephen Colbert and Steve Martin sang a catchy song about being two best friends and what they each loved about their bestie. The show opened with a sick Colbert sitting on a log trying to recover from a head cold and Steve Martin emerging from the bush with a banjo in hand, ready to sing. Martin and Colbert sang “Two best friends sittin’ in a forest, two best friends sittin’ on a log. Two best friends singin’ a friend song, two best friends who always get along.”

But just because they’re singing a song about best friends, it doesn’t mean they’re actually best friends with each other. The love fest took an awkward turn when Martin sang, “That’s why I love my best friend … Gary.“ Colbert asked Martin to explain, and Martin kindly told the host, “Sorry, we’re just not friends. We’ve met, like, twice. TV friends isn’t the same as being real friends — I think of you as an acquaintance.” But Colbert came around and said, “You know what Steve? I’m starting to really like this Gary.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 8:35 p.m. on NBC.
