Space Force has flown its last mission.

Netflix has canceled the oddball workplace comedy after two seasons, EW has confirmed. Great expectations orbited the series, with Steve Carell returning to TV and reteaming with his old Office boss, Greg Daniels. Space Force featured Carell as General Mark Naird, who was tapped with running a ragtag new branch of the U.S. military, similar to the one that former President Donald Trump announced a few years ago.

The cast also boasted such names as John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, Fred Willard, Jimmy O. Yang, and Ben Schwartz, alongside Tawny Newsome, Diana Silvers, and Don Lake. The 10-episode first season launched in 2020 to mixed reviews, and a seven-episode season 2 arrived in February.

Carell told EW that he was approached by Netflix for a series with just a name and no premise. "The notion of this new military entity was funny to me, so I called Greg Daniels and said, 'How would you feel about doing a show on Space Force with me?'" the actor said, while noting: "It just seemed like a new avenue. It seemed like something that had never been explored before. Obviously, because it hadn't existed. So I think just given that, it could be really anything. Because we'd be developing our show simultaneously as the actual Space Force was being created, there were no parameters, there were no rules. It was a blank sheet of paper for us, and that was intriguing."

Daniels will remain busy with Netflix. He is rejoining forces with his King of the Hill co-creator Mike Judge for an animated dark comedy series titled Bad Crimes, and the duo will executive-produce the animated series Exploding Kittens, which plays out a God-vs.-the-Devil showdown, but "in the bodies of chunky house cats," according to the streamer.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the Space Force news.
