Steve Carell, Rose Byrne clash politics in Jon Stewart's Irresistible trailer

Jon Stewart is finally delegating his Irresistible political satire to the masses.

Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for the former Daily Show host’s sophomore feature as writer and director, an ensemble comedy that seemingly pits stars Steve Carell and Rose Byrne in a war of ideals as political strategists reaching — well, clawing is more like it — toward each other from across the aisle.

The film follows a Democratic strategist, Gary (Carell), embroiled in a political circus before he finds unexpected inspiration in a Marine colonel (Chris Cooper) dedicated to standing up for the rights of his town’s undocumented workers. With the colonel’s help, Gary attempts to win back the Heartland, though a rival Republican strategist, Faith (Byrne), threatens to thwart his plans by disrupting the local race.

Topher Grace, Natasha Lyonne, Mackenzie Davis, CJ Wilson, and Will Sasso have supporting roles in the film, while Moonlight trio Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner produced the film through their Plan B banner alongside Stewart and Lila Yacoub. It marks Stewart’s first directorial effort since his 2014 filmmaking debut Rosewater, which earned strong reviews from movie critics (particularly for Gael García Bernal’s lead performance).

Audiences can vote for Irresistible with their wallets when the film makes its box office debut on May 29. Watch the first trailer above.
