Steve Carell Digs ‘Minecraft’; In Talks To Join Warners’ Vidgame Pic
Steve Carell is creeping toward Minecraft. The voice behind Gru in the Despicable Me films and Foxcatcher Oscar nominee is in talks to join the cast of Warner Bros’ adaptation of the uber-popular video game. Not familiar with it? Ask any 10-year-old.
Rob McElhenney, who co-created, writes for and stars in the veteran FX/FXX comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, will direct the film, which is set for release May 24, 2019. He also wrote the latest draft with Wonder Woman scribe Jason Fuchs. The film, which will be in 3D and Imax, is based on the “open world” PC game and app that sees players create their own avatar and use cubes to create, build and destroy structures and other forms across multiple game modes and various players.
Carell, a six-time Emmy nominee for playing Michael Scott on NBC’s The Office, most recently appeared on the big screen in Cafe Society and The Big Short and next stars as Bobby Riggs opposite Emma Stone’s Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes.
