An unknown assailant attacked Steve Buscemi while he was walking in New York City. On Wednesday, May 8, the 66-year-old actor was reportedly punched in the face and later transported to the hospital by emergency services to treat bleeding, swelling, and bruising in his left eye.

“Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Midtown Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city,” the actor’s publicist said in a statement to Rolling Stone. “He is OK and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of New York.”

The New York Police Department is currently investigating the attack, though no arrests have been made. According to the NYPD’s crime statistics report from last week, reported misdemeanor assault complaints in the city have increased 6.9 percent in 2024 from 2023, while felony assault complaints have increased 4 percent citywide.

In April, a 27-year-old man was charged with assault after throwing a rock at Buscemi’s Boardwalk Empire co-star Michael Stuhlbarg during an attack in New York’s Central Park. The assailant was taken into custody and Stuhlbarg reportedly declined medical attention.

Around the same time, multiple women reported being attacked in New York by unknown men who would swiftly approach and punch them in the face. The reports were mostly shared via TikTok. The attacks all similarly occurred during broad daylight.

“Well, we’ve seen a few in the city, but one is too many,” New York Major Eric Adams said at the time. “We see this trending when someone sees something on TikTok, Instagram or one of these social media platforms, they duplicate this behavior and there’s a real correlation between the negative actions and what people are seeing trending on social media.”
