Burton had been playing Jason Morgan on General Hospital from 1991 until his 2012 exit. He eventually returned to the daytime series in 2017 but was let go in 2021 over his refusal to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

"I wanted you to hear it from me personally," Burton previously said in an Instagram video. "Unfortunately, General Hospital has let me go because of the vaccine mandate. I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions, and both of those were denied. Which, you know, hurts. But this is also about personal freedom to me. I don't think anybody should lose their livelihood over this."

Burton then thanked his costars and fans, adding, "I'll always be grateful for my time at General Hospital. I love it there. I grew up there. I grew up with some of you."

Despite his unexpected departure, the actor expressed hope that "maybe one day if these mandates are lifted," he "can return and finish my career as Jason Morgan."

"That would be an honor," he concluded. "And if not, I'm going to take this amazing experience, move forward and be forever grateful."

Burton went on to rejoin the cast of Days of Our Lives in 2023, playing Harris Michaels for the first time since 1988. Although he later announced his exit from the beloved show on Jan. 4, he revealed his plans to return to General Hospital one day later.
