Stephen Thompson ‘super respectfully’ calls out Jorge Masvidal for rematch

If Leon Edwards isn’t interested in fighting Jorge Masvidal next, Stephen Thompson certainly is.

After Edwards claimed he’d rather sit and wait for a title shot than settle his beef with Masvidal, Thompson (16-4-1 MMA, 11-4-1 UFC) chimed in and called for a rematch with “Gamebred.”

Thompson shut Masvidal out in a unanimous decision win at UFC 217 in 2017, but “Wonderboy” thinks Masvidal (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) is a different fighter now.

Well if Leon won’t fight @GamebredFighter I’d love to step in and run it back. We all know Masvidal 2.0 is a different animal! #superrespectfully”

Since losing to Thompson, Masvidal took some time off to film a reality show and came back with a vengeance. In what was a breakout year for him, Masvidal went on to score three big finishes in 2019, including a record-breaking flying knee knockout of Ben Askren, en route to capturing the “BMF” title.

But Masvidal failed to capture the UFC welterweight belt when he dropped two straight title bouts to reigning champion Kamaru Usman. Coming off a loss himself, Thompson wants to run things back with one of the biggest draws in the sport.

Masvidal is expected to meet with UFC brass next week to decide his next move, but the “BMF” champion reiterated he wants to compete against the fighter who will get him closest to a title shot.
