Stephen Sondheim at the Tony Awards: All 75 wins from ‘West Side Story’ to ‘Assassins’

Stephen Sondheim has almost never been more popular than in the two years since his passing in November 2021. In that time, celebrated revivals of “Company,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd” have come to Broadway, and successful remounting of “Assassins” and “Merrily We Roll Along” have played Off-Broadway, which is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works.

This fall will once again spotlight Sondheim. The tremendously successful Off-Broadway run of “Merrily” starring Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe opens on Broadway on October 10, which will mark the first remounting since its original, unsuccessful run in 1981. In addition, his final musical “Here We Are,” which is based on two Luis Buñuel films—“The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel”—will have its highly-anticipated world premiere Off-Broadway, opening on October 22.

In honor of another “season of Sondheim,” take a look back at every single Tony Award his productions have won over the past 65 years, from “West Side Story” to the latest revival of “Sweeney Todd” starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, which is currently running. This tally includes all of the musicals for which he served as composer or lyricist, excluding revues, special events in which his works are featured, plays to which he contributed incidental music, or works like “Candide,” for which he only supplied additional lyrics. In all, productions of his works have earned an incredible 75 Tony Awards from 233 nominations; those noms go up to 241 if counting the ones earned by revues “Side by Side by Sondheim,” “Putting It Together,” and “Sondheim on Sondheim.” See the complete list below.

Sondheim’s most revived show is also his oldest, “West Side Story,” which has had six Broadway productions. His most Tony-winning musical is a tie between “Company” and “Sweeney Todd,” as both shows have nabbed 12 trophies apiece; they have both had four productions since their premieres in 1970 and 1979, respectively. Overall, “Company” has earned 28 nominations to 27 for “Sweeney.” The original production of “Company” is also his most nominated production ever with a whopping 14 bids, which includes separate nominations for Original Score and Lyrics.

The 2002 revival of “Into the Woods” is his most nominated revival ever with 10, while the 2021 “Company” is his winningest revival with 5 trophies; the 2004 revival of “Assassins” also won five times, but that production was the first time the show had ever played Broadway and was only considered a revival at the Tonys due to its original 1990 Off-Broadway production.

Only four of his musicals have never won a Tony: “Anyone Can Whistle,” “Do I Hear a Waltz?,” “Merrily We Roll Along,” and “The Frogs.” This could very likely change at the 2024 ceremony should “Merrily” take home its first-ever prize.

Sondheim’s musicals have earned 22 Tonys for acting including two for Angela Lansbury (“Gypsy,” “Sweeney Todd”) and two for Patti LuPone (“Gypsy,” “Company”).

To his individual name, Sondheim has eight competitive wins from 14 nominations, plus his 2008 Lifetime Achievement prize.
