Stephen King Called For A 1-Day Political Truce. It Didn’t Go Well.
Horror master Stephen King ― a frequent critic of President Donald Trump ― called for an Independence Day truce between progressives and conservatives.
The best-selling author tweeted a message calling for people on the left to hug a conservative... and asking “Trumpies” to do the same for a “liberal snowflake.”
“Just for today, let’s all be Americans,” he pleaded:
Progressives, go find a Trump supporting friend--the one you haven't spoken to since November of 2016--and give him or her a hug. Trumpies, find a "liberal snowflake" friend and do the same. Just for today, let's all be Americans.

Many of those who replied said they just couldn’t do it:
Because I am indeed an American, I do not hug those that support a man who spits on the Constitution and was installed with the help of a foreign power. I'm weird that way.

Impossible, Mr. King. Admirable, but impossible.

Stephen King, you are *such* a sweetheart. I can't do that, though. It's gross.

I love you @StephenKing, but this tweet shows your straight, white, male privilege. This is not a time for hugs. #Resist

I’ve willingly gone to some very dark places with you, Stephen King, but this is a bridge too far.

But a few defended his call for a Fourth of July hug for friends on the other side of the political divide:
He didn’t say hug a stranger. He said hug a friend. There’s no point in hugging a hate mongering stranger. But there’s a need for us to remember why we ever loved each other in the first place. Most likely, nothing will happen. But for gods sake maybe we’ll change someone’s mind.

I hug them every time I see them. They are my family & friends. I still care for & love them. I don’t hate them. I am disappointed with them.
I disagree with their opinions & hate the repercussions from their opinions. Trump will be gone in 2-6 yrs and we will go on. ❤️☮️🇺🇸— Sterling (@GeneEstill) July 4, 2018
