Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Show Has Very Somber Tone

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert was on hiatus Tuesday night so Stephen could host his election special on Showtime, Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going to Clean Up This Sh*t? It was essentially The Late Show, but with foul language.

Throughout the show, Stephen and his guests had a difficult time staying positive as election results showed Donald Trump in the lead. Political analyst Mark Halperin said “Outside of the Civil War, World War II, and including 9/11, this may be the most cataclysmic event the country has ever seen.”

Jeff Goldblum had a similarly difficult time staying positive, saying, “I’m very frightened, I’m very alarmed, I’m sobered and upset.”

The most shocking comments of the night came from comedian Jena Friedman. She said, “I feel like I’m about to give birth to a baby that is already dead.”

Stephen attempted to end the night on a positive note by saying, “Kiss a Democrat, go hug a Republican, give a Libertarian a reach around … Goodnight and may God bless America!”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
