Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers recall their first time meeting Don Rickles

Throughout Thursday, celebrity tributes poured in for Don Rickles, who died at the age of 90. The salutes continued on late night, where both Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers recalled their wildly different, but equally memorable first encounters with the comedian.

The hosts’ stories revealed the two sides that made Rickles so beloved. For Meyers, he got the “King of Insults,” as was demonstrated when he shared his interaction with the comedian upon approaching him at a party.

“He just looked at me and said, Oh, I’m so sorry to hear Saturday Night Live was canceled,'” shared Meyers on Late Night, saying he told Rickles the show was still on the air. “And then he just went, Ugh, a guy can dream.'”

On the other hand, Colbert’s Rickles story demonstrated why he was also called “Mr. Warmth.” On The Late Show, Colbert recalled losing to Rickles at the Emmys, only to soon be embraced by the comic afterward.

“He hugged me and told me I was good,” said Colbert. “And I felt like a made man because we all should have his career and be who he was.”

Colbert alluded to the story in a tweet he sent out earlier in the day.
