Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Coverage: Showtime Unveils Details
“Get all the election news without all the ethics and standards of news,” Stephen Colbert said this morning by way of plugging his Showtime live special on Election Night, Tuesday, November 8 at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT.
The unprecedented partnership between CBS’ late-night show and Showtime has been given a name: Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going To Clean Up This Sh*t?
The enormous advantage of having a broadcast late-night host cover this particular election night on a premium cable networks, Showtime Networks president and CEO David Nevins noted in this morning’s announcement, is that Colbert will be able to directly quote a candidate without being bleeped.
The Late Show host will react in real time to election results as the state-by-state returns come in. It will be, Showtime boasted, the perfect election-night destination for people wanting to see all the latest news without having to watch the news.
“It will be all the political comedy you love from my CBS show, with all the swearing and nudity you love from Showtime,” Colbert chimed in.
The one-hour show will come from Late Show’s home at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City and feature a studio audience. The program also will feature remote segments and surprise guests.
Colbert’s Late Show has broadcast live during both the Republican and Democratic national conventions as well as after some of the debates. But this marks the first time the Late Show, starring former Comedy Central late-night political satirist Colbert, has partnered with a cable network to produce a live event.
