After outcries that took the form of the hashtag #FireColbert gained steam, “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert addressed the elephant in the room on Wednesday night, stopping short of apologizing for a Trump joke that some decried as homophobic.
But he also got back to business, doing a bit that thrashed Republicans for a pending House vote expected to repeal large swaths of the Obama Care Act.
Yes, House majority leader and California rep Kevin McCarthy — who Colbert pointed out has the “saddest eyes” — said Wednesday that “we have enough votes… It’ll pass.” If passed, it’s a move Colbert indicated would be regrettable: “Why the hell did we do that?”
As Colbert adeptly explained it, states would have the choice to opt out of Obamacare for patients with pre-existing conditions. He highlighted the idiocy of North Carolina rep Robert Pittenger’s proposed solution: Just move to a different state.
“Hey kids, dad’s got pancreatitis. Road trip!” the host quipped. “This is going to be a real boon for state tourism. Look for signs: Virginia is for livers; I heart-transplant New York; and Come get an Alabamputation.”
Watch it above.
