Meet Stephen Colbert's 'Colbeard' in a New 'Late Show' Video

David Letterman may be gone, but The Late Show lives on. New host Stephen Colbert has broken his prolonged radio (and video) silence since stepping down from The Colbert Report in 2014, launching a brand-new website for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The site will be the go-to spot for all things Colbert, including video clips like the one he's recorded introducing viewers to his new best friend: the Colbeard. That would be the grey thing that’s covering his face, making him look like a homeless sea captain… which explains how he landed the cover of Homeless Sea Captain Monthly.

Now that he’s coming back to television, though, Colbert has got to find some way to make the Colbeard viewer-friendly. So he walks through various looks, starting with the “Un-Hitler,” followed by the “Amish” and the “Half-Wolverine” before arriving at “Classic Clean Colbert.” “I think my face and I are finally ready to do this,” he says happily, before realizing he’s got another three months to go before he’s ready for late night. Welcome back, Stephen. We missed you. But your beard? Not so much.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert premieres September 8 on CBS.
