Stephen Colbert helps astronaut Scott Kelly with pop-culture catch-up

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly recently returned to Earth after spending nearly a year in space. He missed quite a lot of craziness over the past months, so Stephen Colbert tried to catch him up on all of it in an open letter-style monologue Thursday.

“Scott, you might want to write some of this down,” Colbert said. “Thanks to Taylor Swift, we now know that girls travel in what are called ‘squads.’ It’s a group of girls. Like a murder of crows, a squad of girls. And squads have ‘goals.’ My goal? Be in a squad.”

Colbert also demonstrated the Whip/NaeNae dance for Kelly, although he noted “the important thing to know is now that I have done it, they have stopped doing it.” He also recommended seeing The Martian, since “it really makes you feel like you’re in space.” Last but not least, Colbert touched on one of his main topics over the past few months.

“Of course there is a presidential race this year, and it’s … it’s going good,” Colbert said, his voice cracking. “And, uh, don’t look it up.”
