Stephen Colbert cuts finger while cooking with Giada De Laurentiis

Giada De Laurentiis stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to share her recipe for spaghetti with chianti and fava beans. And if that already sounds like something Hannibal Lecter might enjoy, just wait until you see what Colbert added to it.

The interview started a little bumpy, with De Laurentiis critiquing Colbert on his pronunciation of Italian words. After one exchange, Colbert chugged an entire bottle of chianti, which may or may not have caused his later mishap.

Colbert was given the task of hand-grating parmigiano cheese for the meal. He told De Laurentiis that he had been a waiter at a fancy Italian restaurant in Chicago for five years, which is why he’s so good at grating cheese.

While telling the story, Colbert nicked his finger on the cheese grater. De Laurentiis offered Colbert a towel and then suggested he dip his finger into a pot of hot chianti.

The hot wine made the cut sting even more, which led to lots of laughs from the audience. Colbert ultimately resolved the issue by downing another glass of wine.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
