Starz Nabs Julianne Moore’s ‘Mary & George’ for North America

Starz has picked up the U.S. and Canada rights to Mary & George, an historical psychodrama starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine and created and penned by Killing Eve writer D.C. Moore.
The Sky Studios seven-parter has Moore playing Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, who in 17th century England and alongside her son, George Villiers, played by Galitzine, seduced King James I and became his lover.

The ruthless mother and son became one of the richest and most influential players in the English court. Tony Curran stars as King James I, the target of the social climbers’ designs. Starz will debut Mary & George in 2024 across North America.
“We can’t wait for the world to discover the untold story of Mary Villiers, who mastered the art of sexual and political conquests in a male-dominated society. And to have Julianne leading this remarkable cast is a dream,” Alison Hoffman, president of domestic networks for Starz, said in a statement on Thursday.
Mary & George is produced by Hera Pictures, in association with Sky Studios. The series’ ensemble cast includes Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Trine Dyrholm, Sean Gilder, Amelia Gething and Simon Russell Beale.
Moore’s script for Mary & George was inspired by Benjamin Woolley’s nonfiction book The King’s Assassin. Liza Marshall, D.C. Moore, Oliver Hermanus, Sam Hoyle and Julianne Moore executive produce. Founded in 2017 by former Channel 4 head of drama Liza Marshall, Hera Pictures had as its first drama Temple, an eight-part series that starred Mark Strong.
The distribution deal with Starz was brokered by Sky Studios. NBCUniversal Global Distribution handles international sales for Sky Studios.
