Stars Hit The Purple Carpet For ‘The Color Purple’ Los Angeles World Premiere

Stars of the forthcoming The Color Purple musical film flocked to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Wednesday (Dec. 6) for its Los Angeles world premiere.

Fantasia Barrino, who plays Celie, Halle Bailey, who plays a young Nettie, Danielle Brooks, who plays Sofia, and more strutted on the purple carpet along with original stars of the 1985 film including Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery, as well as director, Steven Spielberg.

Additionally, the movie’s stars: Taraji P. Henson, who plays Thug Avery, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as young Celie, Ciara as adult Nettie, H.E.R, Corey Hawkins, Colman Domingo, Deon Cole, and more walked the carpet, as well as producer Scott Sanders. The iconic Quincy Jones, who also produced the film did not walk the carpet.

Other guests in attendance included Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, Quinta Brunson, Chlöe Bailey, Lisa Raye, Lupita Nyong’o, Mary Mary, Tasha Cobbs, Dominique Fishback and author of the original novel, Alice Walker.

The 2023 remake of  The Color Purple is an adaptation of the Alice Walker novel and the Broadway musical it inspired — directed by Blitz Bazawule. Warner Bros. Pictures has described the anticipated film as a “bold new take on the beloved classic” about “the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond.” The original motion picture premiered in 1985, starring Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Margaret Avery and more.

The Color Purple musical film is set for a Christmas Day release this year. “I think that this is a movie that people will celebrate with their families. But I think women in particular will be healed from this movie and its portrayal of sisterhood,” expressed Winfrey to ESSENCE.
