These Stars Hate Christmas (Crazy, We Know)

Ah, Christmas! You know all the clichés, right? It’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s the hap-hap-happiest season of all. Everything is very merry, and everyone has a twinkle in their eye. And while we are 100 percent on board with all of that trite holiday cheer, there exist a few celebrities who seem to have trouble mustering up any Christmas spirit.

You’re probably thinking, How is it possible for anyone to not love Christmas? Much less someone in Hollywood who has the power (read: money!) to live their best Yuletide life every single year? Inexplicably, though, there really are celebrities out there in the world whose hearts aren’t filled with joy by the mere sight of things like twinkling Christmas lights and stacks of presents under the tree. For them, Christmas is less merry and more maddening.

Sure, some of them are only half-serious about their disdain for end-of-the-year jolliness. Some even make valid points about how this particular holiday has become too commercialized. But, c’mon… it’s Christmas, y’all! It’s time to tap into your inner Cindy Lou Who, not your inner Grinch.

So, take a look at the following celebrities who hate Christmas. And, to help counter their holiday humdrum, drink a little eggnog, eat some figgy pudding, hang your stocking by the chimney with care and, in general, channel your best Christmas cheer.

Hugh Grant

He may be in one of the most beloved movies of all time, but Love Actually star Hugh Grant apparently isn’t nearly as festive as his dancing Prime Minister makes the rest of us feel. Speaking to the U.K.’s Mirror in 2009, he admitted that he actually avoids Yuletide celebrations. “I am in New York this Christmas. I’ll be spending time with my brother and his family and my ancient father,” he shared, revealing, “I can’t pretend to really be into the holiday season. For the last several years I managed to avoid it. I have even arranged to be working in Muslim countries to escape it.”

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus typically seems to keep it pretty lighthearted, but the holidays apparently make her uncharacteristically somber. In 2016, she took to Instagram to share her thoughts on Christmas, saying, “Call me the grinch but ‘Christmas’ always makes me feel deeply sad.” However, Cyrus sort of has a point when it comes to that Christmas funk. “It is filled with so much excessiveness & greed,” she explained, adding, “I just hope everyone gives the gift of love and acceptance this year to not only their own family but those around the globe who don’t get everything they wished for due to life’s unfair circumstances! My parents always made Christmas about others. And I hope you find it in your heart to do the same!”

Christoph Waltz

Somehow, we’re not terribly surprised to learn Christoph Waltz isn’t the very merriest man around the holidays. The Big Eyes star confessed to Backstage OL in 2014 that he could do without Christmas altogether. When asked what he wanted to receive that year, he deadpanned, “No Christmas… That’s my biggest wish, no Christmas.” So, what’s with his Christmas crankiness? Waltz feels as though commercialism “comes to its unbearable peak over Christmas. And I’m against it.” Hey, he and Cyrus apparently have something in common!

Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne’s dislike of Christmas runs so deep that he doesn’t even find any joy in opening presents! Then again, it might be because wife Sharon is a huge shopaholic and goes a little overboard with gifting. “I have to unravel all these f***ing presents. What a f***ing waste of paper,” he grumbled to the U.K.’s Express. In a word? Bah-hum-bug. “I f***ing hate Christmas. I f***ing hate it. Everything stops. When I used to drink, it was a good excuse to get f***ed. Now I just hate it.”

Lady Gaga

Listen, Lady Gaga’s public display of vitriol took place back in 2010, so maybe she’s since had a change of heart. But if she has, she hasn’t been quite as vocal about it as she was during a London concert. While onstage greeting fans in the front row at her show, Gaga picked up a Santa doll that had been thrown on the stage. After inspecting it for a minute, she said, “I do like Christmas. But for those of you who are feeling lonely this Christmas, just to keep everyone happy…” she trailed off before biting the head off of poor Mr. Claus.

Colin Firth

Welp, it’s official. The cast of Love Actually might actually be trying to ruin Christmas for us. First Hugh Grant and now Colin Firth?! Say it isn’t so. And yet, it apparently is — according to the Daily Mail, Firth revealed his innermost feelings about Christmas during an interview in 2009. “I have a profound loathing of Christmas. It’s sad really. At this time of year, I am careful not to switch on the radio because those novelty jingles make me homicidal and plunge me into the heart of Scrooge territory. I think Christmas turns us all into Scrooge. Everyone is trying to throw happy stuff at you, and that’s when I come over all humbug.”
