Starbucks with drive-thru could come to Barnegat, but not without township OK

BARNEGAT - Hey coffee fans, Starbucks wants to open a café with a drive-thru on West Bay Avenue.

WP Barnegat LLC, a developer which has built a shopping center on West Bay at Sandpiper Drive, has filed a proposal with the township to construct a 2,225-square-foot Starbucks café at the center.

Besides a drive-through lane, plans also include a patio with a canopy for outdoor seating.

The proposal will need approval from the township Zoning Board of Adjustment, as fast-food restaurants with drive-thru lanes are not allowed in the area. So the developer will need an exception, or a use variance.

Township officials still are reviewing the Starbucks application. A hearing before the zoning board has not been scheduled.

If approved, Starbucks will join other new businesses at the center, including Dollar General, Mattress Warehouse and AutoZone. The Starbucks has been proposed on a parcel at the center that was previously planned for a bank.
