Disney and Lucasfilm posted a surprise announcement for a new Star Wars series, Tales of the Empire, and it looks pretty brilliant. The set of short stories begins airing on May 4, 2024 – because of course it does – exclusively on Disney+, and it delves into several unexplored facets of the Clone Wars period through the early imperial period.

Like Tales of the Jedi before it, Tales of the Empire follows several characters prominent in other Star Wars stories and fills in the gaps in their lives. Darth Vader is there, as expected, along with Thrawn, Barriss Offee’s Inquisitor training, the Fourth Sister, and even General Grievous. The most interesting one, though, is Morgan Elspeth, a human member of a Dathomir coven who joins the Empire and eventually faces off against Ahsoka Tano in the New Republic era.

Her goal is summoning Thrawn back to the galaxy, which is a pretty thin bit of motivation, but Tales of the Empire aims to explore her background in a more satisfying way. Count Dooku and General Grievous’ assault on Dathomir sparks a desire for vengeance in Elsbeth and sets her on a path of betrayal and murder until she finally cements her position in the imperial navy.

It’s a much stronger framework for character development than we saw in Ahsoka, where Elsbeth’s pain somehow drove her to conquer other planets for plot reasons that defied conventional logic.

Anyway, she’s only half of the focus. The other half is Barriss Offee’s fall from grace into the Dark Side, as she goes from celebrated hero of the Clone Wars to loyal supporter of the Empire, and not entirely by choice. It looks like a more interesting bit of exploration into what made her change her views on the Jedi, and the answer is torture and brainwashing.
