Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ascends to $1 billion at worldwide box office
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has ascended to new box office heights.
Disney announced Wednesday that the film has officially amassed over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales after 28 days in release, becoming the fifth film in the Star Wars franchise to reach the milestone.
The feat also gave Disney its seventh total billion-dollar release of 2019, after the studio’s Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, Aladdin, and Frozen II previously crossed the marker throughout the last year.
Skywalker pushed past $1 billion Tuesday, earning $4.5 million from global markets. Its domestic total stands at $481.3 million, while its worldwide earnings clock in at $519.7 million. Top foreign grosses for the blockbuster project include the United Kingdom ($72 million), Germany ($61.7 million), France ($50.7 million), Australia ($30.3 million), as well as China and Spain (both $20.1 million).
Directed by J.J. Abrams and starring an ensemble cast (including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Anthony Daniels, and Keri Russell), Skywalker opened to $177.4 million at the North American box office in late December, notching the third-highest Star Wars opening of all time behind The Force Awakens‘ $247.9 million and The Last Jedi‘s $220 million.
