'Star Wars' Death Star Looms Large in Latest 'Rogue One' TV Spot

In case you’ve been living under a rock — or in a distant galaxy — there’s a new Star Wars prequel arriving in theaters in just a few more weeks. While it won’t feature Jar Jar Binks, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will again set the clock back to before 1977’s original Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope to tell the story of the rebel alliance team that stole the plans for the evil Empire’s Death Star. If its premise sounds more like a franchise-mythology footnote than the basis for an actual feature-length film, well, its latest TV spot — a 30-second commercial titled “Dream” (watch it above) — isn’t likely to dispel such notions.

It’s a saga that continues to position itself as akin to a gritty war movie, and the spot reminds us again that Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso is leading a mission to thwart the Empire’s plans to launch the Death Star, a weapon capable of unimaginable destructive power. Of course, Erso and her comrades’ triumph is preordained (since, you know, we’ve all seen A New Hope). Still, as with its prior promos, this latest spot nonetheless suggests that Rogue One will provide lots of battles and rousing speeches, as well as at least a bit of material featuring everyone’s favorite Sith Lord, Darth Vader.

Will Rogue One justify its own existence with a stirring story of intergalactic robbery? Or will it merely indicate that Disney is trying too hard to milk the Star Wars property for everything its worth? We’ll find out soon enough, when the film — co-starring Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker — blasts into theaters on Dec. 16, 2016.
