Star Wars, Blade Runner top Rotten Tomatoes’ most anticipated movies of 2017 survey
Following a dominant year at the box office in 2016, it seems the reign of the sequel is showing no signs of slowing down in 2017.
Star Wars: Episode VIII, Blade Runner 2049, and Alien: Covenant topped Rotten Tomatoes’ survey of the most anticipated movies of the year.
Star Wars fans got an extra dose of the galaxy far, far away in 2016’s most anticipated movie, Rogue One, which has brought in more than $800 million at the worldwide box office following its Dec. 16 release. Episode VIII will serve as the follow-up to 2015’s smash hit Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That film will pick up where The Force Awakens left off and features Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, and the late Carrie Fisher, who completed filming before she died last month.
“George Lucas and Ridley Scott brought new respect to the oft-maligned science fiction genre in the ’70s and ’80s, so it’s easy to understand why the latest chapters in Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Alien and generating the most excitement amongst critics,” Rotten Tomatoes editor-in-chief Matt Atchity said in a statement.
Blade Runner 2049 will return with Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford nearly 35 years after the original film’s 1982 release, while the next chapter in Ridley Scott’s Alien saga will hit screens in May.
The top five was further rounded out by another pair of sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and War for the Planet of the Apes.
