Depending on your age, hearing the word “tots” might remind you of the 2004 movie Napoleon Dynamite.

Since nostalgia is always in season, Burger King has revived Napoleon and his pal Pedro to reintroduce its cheesy tater tots, which were discontinued in 2009.

This isn’t the first time a brand has reached into the past for marketing purposes. Reuniting beloved cast members and characters is a well-worn strategy. In 2012, Honda dropped some big bucks to bring Ferris Bueller out of retirement.

And that same year, Old Navy brought together Jason Priestley, Luke Perry, and Jennie Garth of Beverly Hills, 90210 for a surprisingly kid-friendly take on their love triangle.

In 2015, fans of the TV show Cheers were briefly excited, then quickly disappointed, when its cast partially reunited — excited because Kirstie Alley, George Wendt, and John Ratzenberger were together again at the bar; disappointed because it was an ad for Jenny Craig.

A walk down memory lane is always a safe bet for brands, although with new Gilmore Girls and Fuller House series crowding your Netflix queue, the stunt is starting to lose its shine.
