Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt has revealed the one thing that would need to happen before he would agree to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Peter Quill/Star-Lord.

During an interview with IGN to promote The Garfield Movie, the actor — who has played Star-Lord since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy — opened up about possibly returning to the MCU before the end of The Multiverse Saga.

“It’s hard to imagine what that would look like, so I guess I’d just have to take it on a case-by-case basis,” he said. “Of course, I’d be open to it. I love the character. It changed my life. If it came along and it made sense and I felt like it was a story worth telling, then I’d certainly, certainly be open to it. I love playing Star-Lord.”

While Pratt seems game to return to the MCU, he did add that he wouldn’t reprise the role of Star-Lord if James Gunn — who wrote and directed all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the holiday special — didn’t give his blessing. With Gunn under contract with DC Studios for the next few years, he would be unable to write and/or direct any potential Star-Lord project for Marvel.

“But it’d be tough to do without James,” he admitted, “and you’d have to find an apparatus by which to maintain the tone that he so expertly creates, and it’s kind of hard because he’s truly one of a kind. And it would have to be with his blessing, so we’ll see.”

Marvel Studios has already promised more Star-Lord

At the end of 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Peter Quill — now apparently retired from saving the galaxy — returns to Earth and reunites with his grandfather, with the post-credits scene showing them enjoying a quiet breakfast together. As the screen fades to white, the following text appears: “The Legendary Star-Lord will return.” This confirms that Marvel Studios has plans for Star-Lord in the future of the MCU. What those plans are, however, have not yet been announced.

The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is available to stream on Disney+.
