Stanford RB Bryce Love will play at Washington State (Updated)

There’s a chance Stanford running back Bryce Love could play Saturday vs. Washington State.

The nation’s yards-per-carry leader missed last week’s game vs. Oregon State because of an ankle injury. Without him, Stanford’s offense sputtered in a 15-14 win over the Beavers.

Tuesday, Stanford coach David Shaw said Love feels better than he did last week and will probably be a game-time decision to play against No. 25 Washington State on Saturday. The game is the first in a pivotal two-game stretch for Stanford’s Pac-12 North chances. After playing Washington State, the Cardinal face Washington on Friday.

Washington State has two losses in the conference while Washington and Stanford each have one. The winner of the round-robin series between the three teams will likely represent the North in the Pac-12 title game.

Love, with 135 carries for 1,387 yards, leads the country in rushing by 19 yards over San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny. But Penny has 74 more caries than Love does. The third-leading rusher in the country, Colorado’s Phillip Lindsay, has 105 more carries than Love. The Stanford back has clearly been the best in the country and should be a Heisman finalist– he’s No 2 in our latest edition of Heisman Watch — even if his 10+ yards per carry pace drops off over the rest of the season.

Stanford also has a decision to make at quarterback. Keller Chryst was the team’s quarterback vs. Oregon State, but Shaw said K.J. Costello could also play. The two QBs have split time through the first half of Stanford’s season.

“Going forward, we’ll see where we are with the quarterback situation is by the end of the week,” Shaw said via CardinalSportsReport.com. “We’re in competition mode, I think as it should be and how we have been. Keller [Chryst] has practiced extremely well. KJ [Costello] has practiced well. We probably won’t wait until game day.”
