Stacey Kent joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Summer Me, Winter Me, a new collection of songs fans have requested from Kent’s live shows but which she had never previously recorded.
The jazz vocalist discusses how the rag-tag group of tracks still results in an album that flows, the ephemeral quality of playing live, and finding novelty in decades-old songs. Kent also chats about why she recorded two different versions of “Ne Me Quitte Pa” and the changes that “Postcard Lover” has gone through over the past decade.
She then talks more about the power of waltzes and sad songs and her own experience of writing the latter. “My sister said to me, ‘This belongs on the album called Songs to Jump off the Bridge To,'” she says of “Ne Me Quitte Pa.” “That’s what sisters are for, though. She’s come to my live shows … and she has pointed out that it’s so bleak.”
