ST. LOUIS – Hundreds gathered to see the St. Louis native Grammy-nominated music producer Metro Boomin perform at the celebration launch of the Cardinals City Connect uniform Monday.

“Everyone in there jumping, screaming. I couldn’t have a better time,” Isaiah Webster said.

“I think he’s a big deal everywhere. He makes great music, he works with great creators and artists. He’s an overall great influence,” Nathaniel Bahan said.

The St. Louis Cardinals, with the help of another St. Louis native Grammy-winning hip-hop artist, Nelly, unveiled their Nike MLB City Connect series uniform and merchandise line Monday.

“I’ve seen (the jersey) all over social media and I’ve heard about them. I just looked at them in the store and they’re pretty sweet,” Nathaniel Bahan said.

“The jerseys are really cool. They are really cool,” Ellie Mueller said.

The chain-stitched jersey lettering features a familiar nickname for St. Louis, popularized by Nelly, known as “The Lou.” The sleeve patch combines the fleur-de-lis and the Gateway Arch, while the riverpin stripes symbolize St. Louis’ historic role as river city.

“It’s about the whole experience, right? A little memorabilia to take home,” Hannah Wilbanks said.

Metro Boomin performed some of his greatest hits for the crowd. Every Cardinals fan with a themed ticket received a Metro Boomin bobblehead at Monday night’s game. Several were on board with the idea for the Cardinals to have the music producer celebrate the launch of this new era for St. Louis.

“Just the fact, he’s from St. Louis and he’s so successful now. It’s really cool to see,” Mueller said.

The St. Louis Cardinals will debut their City Connect uniforms on the field on May 25 against the Cubs. The team plans to wear the new uniforms an additional 11 times throughout the season.
