The award-winning Netflix original series, Squid Game, is making its highly anticipated return to the screen. Since its release, the show has gained massive success, making it Netflix’s most-viewed series ever and becoming the first non-English show to win multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards, including the SAG Ensemble Award.

Prior to the show’s premiere, Netflix executives had little idea that a series entirely filmed in Korean would become more than a regional success, but its endearing characters paired with spine-tingling scenes made Squid Game a beloved favorite of millions.

The fascinatingly horrific show follows players desperate for money partaking in deadly games with the hope of winning a large cash prize. Following its release, Squid Game’s commentary on Korea’s economic system and class conflict has resonated with many viewers. The series spurred protests throughout Korea, where strikers dressed up in the infamous green tracksuits from the show to support workers and labor unions.

Internationally, Squid Game has reached every nook and cranny of the world, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon. Aside from the memes that have traveled across every social media platform, a real-life version of the games, minus the blood, took place in the United Arab Emirates.

It’s no surprise that following the instant success of the series, a second season is in the works. Here’s what we know so far about the bloodbath’s next era.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Squid Game Season 1.]

Is Squid Game Season 2 Returning to Netflix?

Director of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk initially had a challenge getting his idea for the show off the ground. After twelve years in the making, Squid Game gained immense international success following its release in September 2021, and just last weekend, Netflix officially announced that the show will start filming its second season.

When Will Squid Game Season 2 Be Released?

Fans will need to stay patient as it may be some time before the next season airs. The show is still in its early stages of filming, and according to Director Hwang, the release may not come before the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.

Who Will Return in Squid Game Season 2?

Protagonist Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is confirmed to return to the next round of the games, and the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) — the masked figure who oversees the games — will also be a key character for the next chapter of Squid Game. In the Season 2 announcement, Hwang hinted that the recruiter for the game (Gong Yoo) is also likely to make an appearance, stating that “the man in the suit with ddakji might be back.”

Who Was The Front Man in Season 1 of Squid Game?

The Front Man played an essential role in running the games, and although it was initially unclear who was behind the masked Front Man, it was revealed in Episode 8 of Season 1 (spoiler alert) that the mysterious figure was In-ho, brother of undercover police officer Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon). Jun-Ho joined the game to search for his lost brother, In-ho, who disappeared after winning the 2015 games. The Front Man’s return to the show indicates that the second round of games may be just as heartbreaking, grueling, and captivating as the first.

What New Characters Will We Meet?

Although it is unclear who will replace the beloved Sae-byeok (HoYeon Jung) and Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo), Hwang’s announcement confirmed that there will be new characters that fans will meet. He teased that the creepy doll that has quickly become the mascot for the show, Young-hee, will introduce her boyfriend, Cheol-su, to the screen.

What New Games Will Be Introduced?

In May 2022, Director Hwang told Vanity Fair what he plans to bring back to the show. Although the specific games that will be brought to life haven’t been revealed, Hwang mentioned that he will continue exploring the essential themes that surrounded Season 1 of Squid Game, stating that “humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again.”

Will Gi-Hun’s Red Hair Also Make a Return?

Fans might remember Gi-hun’s makeover that features a shocking red hairstyle at the end of Season 1. Hwang told Zapzee the reason for his decision stating “I came to the conclusion that Gi-hun would never dye his hair red. It would be the craziest thing for him to do. So I chose the color and I thought it really showed his inner anger.” Whether or not the vibrant red hair will make a return to the screen is unclear, but what we do know is that Gi-hun’s fiery and charming spirit is sure to return in Season 2.

Will There Be a Season 3?

Shortly after the release of Season 1, Hwang told The Korea Times that he was “in talks with Netflix over Season 2 as well as Season 3.” The international success that the Netflix show has received is unprecedented for the platform and ensures a long run for the world of Squid Game.

What Can We Expect, Squid Game-Wise, Before Season 2?

Netflix is also set to release Squid Game: The Challenge, where fans can enter to compete for a reward of $4.56 million. Players will participate in a series of games similar, although not deadly, to the original show. “Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end,” says Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series.

Squid Game Season 1 is streaming now on Netflix. We’ll update this post with additional information as it becomes available.
