Square One Entertainment Acquires ‘Midnight Sun’ For Germany – AFM

EXCLUSIVE: In a pre-American Film Market move, ambitious German distributor Square One Entertainment has acquired rights to Midnight Sun from Mister Smith Entertainment. Currently in production, the film stars Bella Thorne (The Duff), Patrick Schwarzenegger (Grown Ups 2) and Rob Riggle (22 Jump Street). Scott Speer (Step Up Revolution) is directing from a screenplay by Eric Kirsten, with John Rickard (Horrible Bosses), Zack Schiller (Jane Got A Gun) and Jen Gatien producing. David Boies, James McGough, Alan Ou, Hiroki Shirota and Speer are exec producing. Devin Andre is co-producing.

The deal was concluded by Mister Smith chief exec David Garrett and Square One chief exec Al Munteanu.

Midnight Sun, a remake of the 2006 Japanese film, follows 17-year-old Katie (Thorne), who lives with a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. During the day she is housebound, having only her father, Jack (Riggle) for company. But it is after dark that Katie’s world opens up, when she ventures out to the local train station to play her guitar for travelers. One night, she meets Charlie (Schwarzenegger), an ex-high school all-star athlete, whom she has secretly admired for years. She hides her condition from him and the two begin a uniquely powerful romance.

Square One’s upcoming slate includes 50 Shades Of Black, Pride And Prejudice And Zombies And The 9th Life Of Louis Drax.
